He came into the headlines in October 2023 when his biopic “12th Failed” was released. the biopic 12th Failed is about his journey of struggles to be an IPS officer. Manoj Sharma has not been good at academics since childhood. He never performed well. He got 3rd division in 9th and 10th classes. To pass the class’s 11th final examination, he cheated. In the 12th board exam, he failed in every subject except Hindi because he was unable to cheat in the exam. But he didn’t even think of giving up on his dream of studying. So, he and his girlfriend Sharddha Joshi keep him motivated and he studied well.
After an incident, he realized the real power of a Civil servant and aimed to be a civil servant by cracking the Madhya Pradesh Public Service Commission (MPPSC) exams. After completing his school, for further studies, he moved to Gwalior. Manoj started pursuing his graduation and preparing for PCS exams. While preparing for the PCS exams, he came to know that after cracking UPSC exams, he could get a job at a higher position than those obtained after clearing the PCS exams. To crack the UPSC exam, he started preparing but his family’s financial condition was not good. To sustain himself, he started doing the job as a tempo driver.
After completing his graduation degree, he shifted to New Delhi and started preparing for the UPSC exam in Mukherjee Nagar. To survive and buy study material for the UPSC exam preparation, he used to earn money by taking dogs on walks. Later Manoj started working as a peon in a library and a washroom cleaner.
While preparing for UPSC in Delhi, Manoj Sharma met Mr. Vikas Divyakirti, who is the founder of Drishti IAS. Manoj told him about his situation and Mr. Divyakirti got ready to coach Manoj for free since he had no money for the tuition fee.
Manoj cracked the prelims in his first CSE attempt, but could not crack the mains. Unfortunately, On his 2nd and 3rd attempts, he could not be able to clear the prelims. But he didn’t give up and secured AIR 121 in his fourth attempt and opted for the Indian Police Service (IPS).
In 2005, he underwent a police training module at the Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel National Police Academy (SVPNPA) in Hyderabad, Telangan. He finished his police training on 22 August 2005.

After being an IPS officer, In Maharashtra, Manoj Kumar Sharma has served in different roles in different positions. As a Superintendent of Police (SP) of Kolhapur, he actively handled the protests regarding the hike in the price of sugarcane and the illegal collection of toll tax on the highways. He maintained the law and order situation. He has also participated in various counter-naxal operations at Gadchiroli, Chandrapur, Gondiya, Yavatmal, Bhandara, and Nanded.
During the agitation in Maharashtra following the murder of Communist Party of India (CPI) member Govind Pansare in 2015, he helped control the situation. Later, IPS Manoj Kumar Sharma was posted as a Deputy Inspector General (DIG) to the Central Industrial Security Force (CISF). Later, he was posted as an Additional Commissioner of Police (ACP) in Mumbai.
